The
Countdown to London 2012 Faster 3 Coin UK 2010 Set commemorates the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games (30th Olympiad). This
London 2012 Olympic coin set has a limited mintage of 4,000 and is the only UK gold coin collection to feature the Olympic Rings as part of the design. This set was minted by the British Royal Mint.
While the Royal Mint will be commemorating the Olympics with various sets, the three Olympic sports – Sailing, Cycling and Running – are featured on these coins and each is paired with a Roman god. The obverses feature the portrait of the Queen by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS.
- 1oz gold £100 coin – Neptune (the god of the sea) and the Olympic sport of sailing is depicted on this gold coin
- 1/4oz gold £25 coin – Mercury (messenger of the gods) and running
- 1/4oz gold £25 coin – Diana (goddess of the hunt) and the Olympic cyclist
This is the first of three sets to be minted by the British Royal Mint inspired by the official motto of the Olympic Games: Citius, Altius, Fortius – Faster, Higher, Stronger.
