The
London Olympics 2008 Handover £2 Gold Proof Coin has been minted to commemorate the handover of the Olympic Flag from one host city to the next. The event occurred at the closing ceremonies of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Summer Games. The 2008 Handover Coin was minted by the British Royal Mint and has a limited mintage of only 3,000.
The design around the central gold piece features the names of the two Olympic host cities, Beijing and London, and rings symbolic of the track around the Olympic Stadium. The rings are in rose gold, giving the commemorative a special two-colour gold effect. The obverse features the portrait of the Queen by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS.
The hand-to-hand passing of the flag has been memorialised forever by the British Royal Mint on the 2008 £2 Gold Handover Proof.
