The team was formed in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR Football Club by the Carriage and Wagon department of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot at Newton Heath. On 24th of April 1902 the club's name was changed to “Manchester United”.
In July 2011, the club was named number one in Forbes magazine's annual ranking of the world's 50 most valuable sports teams, valued at $1.86 billion. They also scooped up the record of the most Premier League Championship titles ever won by a single team.
Manchester United has also been fortunate enough to call Old Trafford their home ground since 1910. Old Trafford, nicknamed The Theatre of Dreams by Bobby Charlton, has space for 75,957 spectators making it the stadium with the second-largest capacity of any English football stadium after Wembley Stadium, the third-largest of any stadium in the United Kingdom and the eleventh-largest stadium in Europe.
