This
1oz Mandela / De Klerk gold medallion was minted by the Mint of Norway, in tribute to Mandela and De Klerk for their contributions in bringing democracy to South Africa. This is part of a 5000 mintage and was launched in July 2006.
The obverse features Mandela's bust and bears the inscription "A long walk to freedom" and the reverse De Klerk's bust which says "To bring justice to everybody".

Gold medallions provide an excellent way to commemorate historical figures. Despite – or perhaps because of - South Africa’s tumultuous past, there have been several South Africans who have set a shining example of humanitarianism, and who deserve to be remembered. Nelson Mandela and F.W. de Klerk are two such people.
