Gold medallions provide an excellent way to commemorate historical figures. Despite – or perhaps because of - South Africa’s tumultuous past, there have been several South Africans who have set a shining example of humanitarianism, and who deserve to be remembered. Nelson Mandela and F.W. de Klerk are two such people.
The Mint of Norway developed the one-ounce
gold Mandela/de Klerk medallion to honour the impressive achievements of these men. Together, they orchestrated the end of Apartheid and ushered in a new age. The two former presidents were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993, and the medallion coin was launched in July 2003 in remembrance of this event. Only 5,000 Mandela/de Klerk medallions are available throughout the entire world.
The coin is officially recognised by both the Nobel Institute and the Nelson Mandela Foundation, adding to its value as a collector’s item.
