Nelson Mandela’s (featured on the 1/2oz platinum) life has been an inspiration throughout the world. In 1993 Nelson Mandela accepted the Nobel Peace Prize alongside FW de Klerk for their efforts in bringing democracy to South Africa. Three foundations bearing his name have been set up to continue the legacy - The Nelson Mandela Foundation, The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund and The Mandela-Rhodes Foundation.

Aung San Suu Kyi, featured on the 1oz silver medallion, has come to symbolise the struggle of Burma’s people to be free. Her campaign for democracy led to her arrest and detention for 14 years. She was the world's only imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize recipient until she was released on the 13th of November 2010. Hundreds of her supporters are still detained, many suffering torture and in some cases death.
