The celebratory
2011 2oz Mandela SA Rugby Coin Set consists of a silver and gold coin. The coins, a
2oz gold and a
2oz silver medallion, feature the Springbok emblem (reverse) and Mandela’s bust with the words “A Long Walk To Freedom” (obverse).
South Africa, instrumental in the creation of the Rugby World Cup competition, could not compete in the 1987 and 1991 competition due to boycotts. Debuting in the 1995 Rugby World Cup, the Springboks were victorious. The national team made South Africa proud by winning the final match against New Zealand 15 - 12. In 2007 the Springboks made magic on the field and once again lifted the prestigious Webb Ellis Cup high by beating England 15 – 6.
