This coin was minted in commemoration of the Mine Industry in South Africa. This is a 1oz Gold coin and on the obverse side of the coin it features the Protea Cynaroides (King Protea), South Africa's national flower.
The portrayal of the underground miner at the rock face illustrates the daily task of these brave men who work in the humid depths of South African mines. His face is a study of concentration and the harder he works, so the glistening drops of sweat on his brow increase and run down his face unheeded.
This limited special edition Protea 1oz Gold coin was launched at Gold reef city on the 29th April 1999 to commemorate this occasion. A special mintmark (GRC) appears on this coin - of which only 199 of these have ever been minted.
