Choosing the right collectible coin for your investment portfolio
Coin collecting is an often overlooked investment technique. Finding the right collectible coin to add to your investment portfolio can increase its value significantly. However, there are many people who create coin collections simply for the enjoyment of researching, seeking and obtaining valuable, historically interesting collectibles.

Whether you’re interested in collecting coins to make a profit, or because you have a passion for discovering new and interesting numismatic items, The Scoin Shop offers a diverse selection of collectibles coins from which to choose. Our selection includes a wide range of gold and silver coins such as Krugerrands, Mandela coins, Natura coins and Protea coins, as well as a number of prolific coins from other countries.

Typically, the value of a collectible coin struck from precious metal is calculated at the current price of the metal, and the amount of metal that the coin physically contains. However, when combining coins into a set, the whole is often greater than the sum of its parts.

Browse our e-commerce store to view coins that could increase the value of your collection or investment portfolio, or contact The Scoin Shop for detailed information on the different coins available.

Coin collectibles what makes a set valuable?

Coin collectibles, by definition, are coins that have significant value over and above the price of the metal that they contain. There are several factors that influence the value of collectibles coins, including rarity, historical relevance and demand. It’s even possible for a rare coin to be more valuable than a coin containing a significant amount of gold, simply because there are fewer available.

Often, when included in a set, collectible coins increase the combined value of the entire set (when kept together). Many coins available from The Scoin Shop are parts of sets and can therefore be purchased with other coins from the same set. For example, every year, Natura coins are minted in honour of an important South African topic, such as the mining industry. Each coin denomination is emblazoned with a different image depicting an aspect of the theme. Coin sets, therefore, include coins of different denominations. This ensures that coin collectors can easily purchase a variety of coins pertaining to a specific theme.

There are no strict rules dictating what coins are included in a set. While some coins are minted for the express purpose of being included in a set, others can be grouped by a theme determined by the collector. Popular themes include minting year, coin denomination or commemoration of a particular individual or event. For example, a historically minded numismatist – one who studies currency – may collect coins that depict Nelson Mandela. While these may not be officially recognised criteria for a set, many people are interested in collecting coins pertaining to their particular area of interest.

The Scoin Shop specialises in a wide variety of coins, including those intended to be included in sets. Many of these coins can be purchased individually or in sets, depending of the needs of the buyer. Furthermore, all of our coins are sold in superior packaging that keeps them protected against wear and tear, and reduces their chances of getting damaged.

Collecting coins How do I know what coins to purchase?

Because there are two types of people who collect coins – numismatists and investors – there are two ways of identifying which coins would fit best into your collection:
  1. Collecting coins for investment purposes: Those who are interested in making money from their coins have several options as to which coins are best. If you don’t want to spend too much of your free time assessing coins then simply visit The Scoin Shop’s online portal and purchase coins made from gold or silver. These coins are governed by the price of the precious metal that they contain. While some or of greater value than others, owing to rarity and demand, one can always be sure of their minimum value by checking the daily market price.

  2. On the other end of the spectrum, if you want to ensure that you get the maximum possible return on your investment, you can do some research into the coins that you are buying and select those that are particularly rare or are in extremely high demand. However, while these coins are of greater value than their easily available counterparts, they are more difficult to sell. Because their value is only partially determined by the price of the metal that they contain, buyers would need to research the coins before purchasing them in order to validate their value. This process can be lengthy, and buyers and sellers may not always agree on the coin’s value.

  3. Collecting coins for numismatic relevance: Because numismatists enjoy learning about currency and its history, they often place greater value onto coins that have interesting pasts or are difficult to find. However, numismatists may attribute value to a coin differently owing to their particular field of interest. Coins that one numismatist considers valuable may not be seen as valuable to another.
