Rare Bullion Coins
A bullion coin is a coin made from precious metal such as gold or silver, and kept as an investment or collectors item. These coins are usually available in a variety of weights that are expressed in fractions of troy ounces while some very rare bullion coins are produced in kilogram-weights and heavier.

The history of South African bullion coins

South African gold coins are available and can be traded at the spot price of gold. The most famous rare South African gold coins come in the form of Krugerrands, which are the countrys oldest modern gold bullion coins, and the first to be issued in exact one-ounce sizes. As they were intended to be circulated in the form of currency (as a representative for private ownership of gold) early Krugerrands differ from rare bullion coins in their composition: theyre actually made of a gold alloy with just over eight-percent of copper. This explains the Krugerrands durability against scratches and other damage.

Krugerrands are also sought-after South African gold coins as they were produced at a time when the worlds production of rare coins had ceased for more than forty years following the Great Depression of the 1930s. Owing to South Africas rich gold reserves in the mines of Gauteng, President Paul Kruger in collaboration with the South African Mint Company began producing gold bullion coins. Following the release of these South African gold coins, a trend began which allowed owners to trade bullion coins on the basis of their gold content.

The Krugerrand today

Experts predict that in 2008 the Krugerrand had sold approximately 46 million ounces of gold in coins, despite increasing competition from around the world. Still minted with a bust of President Paul Kruger (the first President of the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek and four times reinstated) on one side, and with a national symbol - the springbok - on the other, these rare coins are instantly recognisable as icons of a proud nation.

Notable competitors on the gold bullion market include the American Gold Eagle and the British Gold Sovereign, which have similar national symbols such as the Lady Liberty and Tudor double rose, struck into their surfaces.

Modern gold bullion coins produced by President Paul Kruger provided a one troy ounce of gold unit that was more than simple legal tender; the gold became a currency with which South Africans could trade goods. Soon, other countries began producing gold bullion coins, and yet Krugerrands remain famous as the first South African gold coins that could be traded according to the current spot price of gold.
